New Laws: Use Headlights And Remove Snow

Two new laws recently went into effect in Pennsylvania for the winter driving season.
The first new law requires the driver of a motor vehicle to use headlights if the windshield wipers are in use during inclement weather. This applies to wipers in the continuous or intermittent mode due to precipitation or atmospheric moisture, including rain, snow, sleet or mist. The fine is $25 and with court costs reaching $100.
The second new law authorizes fines to drivers if snow or ice is dislodged or falls from a moving vehicle and strikes another vehicle or pedestrian causing death or serious bodily injury. The fine ranges from $200 to $1,000 for each offense for the operator of the vehicle from which the ice or snow dislodges or falls.
What it Means for You
Drivers in Pennsylvania have two new laws to consider. A driver who fails to follow the headlight law or snow removal law risks the imposition of fines or worse (possible increased liability from any resulting accidents/injuries). Obviously, the best practice is to use headlights and windshield wipers during inclement weather and remove snow and ice prior to driving. These practices will help a driver to avoid accidents, the imposition of fines and a possible increase in liability from any resulting accidents/injuries.
