Amy A. Shwed

Amy A. Shwed is Chair of the firm's Medical Malpractice Practice Group and a partner in the firm's Scranton office.  She concentrates her practice in medical malpractice defense.  She also represents physicians on professional issues before the Pennsylvania Licensing Bureau.

Attorney Shwed began her litigation career in 1991, gaining valuable trial experience as an Assistant District Attorney for Lackawanna County. Ms. Shwed conducted over 100 jury trials in the District Attorney’s office, prosecuting cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies and capital murder. She ultimately served for more than a decade as Deputy District Attorney for Lackawanna County. 

Since 2001, Ms. Shwed has dedicated her practice to medical malpractice litigation.  She has successfully defended physicians, healthcare providers and hospital entities in counties throughout Pennsylvania in approximately 40 jury trials, and zealously represented numerous defendants who were ultimately dismissed without payment or trial.  Attorney Shwed has established herself as a well-respected and experienced trial attorney, and possesses extensive experience in civil, personal injury and insurance litigation.

Ms. Shwed is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

She has been the recipient of two community service awards for her work with victims of domestic violence, and continues to volunteer in this capacity today.  In 2022, Ms. Shwed was selected by the American Institute of Trial Lawyers as a Litigator of the Year.  By definition, a Litigator of the Year “possesses the knowledge, skill, experience and success of a seasoned litigator.”  Less than .03% of attorneys are nominated for this award.

Ms. Shwed has received the highest level AV® Preeminent rating by Martindale-Hubbell, and is recognized as a Top Rated Lawyer in Healthcare.

Ms. Shwed received her B.A. from College Misericordia in 1988 and her J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1991.
